A new book featuring the origin story of Dennis's black and red striped jumper: The Epic Yarn of Awesomeness
Celebrating 70 years of Dennis the Menace, this collection is packed with 50 favourite comic strips.
As well as mischief and mayhem from the weekly comics, in an exclusive story Dennis finally reveals the secret of his striped jumper. You’ll only find The Epic Yarn of Awesomeness in this very special book, so make sure to get your hands on a copy.
In The Epic Yarn of Awesomeness, Dennis reveals that his jumper belonged to his great, great, one-hundred-more greats grandfather (also called Dennis, naturally). It was knitted by his ancestor’s gran, a friendly witch, using spider wool infused with special red and black magic potions.
Now we know why Dennis has come through so many scrapes and escapades mostly unscathed!
Dennis and Gnasher through the ages
Dennis made his first appearance in Beano on 17 March 1951. In his very first appearance Dennis wore a - now uncharacteristic - shirt and tie, but this was replaced just a month later with Dennis’s iconic striped jumper.
The jumper originally appeared in black and white, but soon after, the recognisable red and black colour was added and has been a consistent feature ever since. It wasn’t just style that shaped Dennis’s iconic look, the red and black colours were chosen because they were the strongest colours of ink available to printers in the 1950s.
Since then Dennis has rarely been seen in anything but his stripes, though we did catch him briefly wearing a shell suit in the 1990s: see our From the Archive: Trouble Never Looked So Good Art Print.
